We are a culture built solely on our traditions. The practise of these very traditions has created a strongly bonded web of love, care and respect amongst us Indians.
Traditions shared by us bring us together. They are the binding glue between people from all walks of life.
Most of our traditions are built on scientific logic, but they owe their origins to the antediluvian times. It is, therefore, not always appropriate to follow them blindly. Our ancestors, those who have put in years and decades of sweat, blood, toil, and brains in deriving these simple solutions to their primeval problems would be looking down upon us with disdain at the reign of anarchy prevailing in our traditional systems.
The fact that we do this in the name of God is almost laughable. When did He ask us to pay hefty amounts in donation to famous temples in order to guarantee a safe future? When did He ask us to shave off our hair? When did He ask us to eat abc on xyz days? When did He define syzygies as auspicious or inauspicious? By burning up logs of wood (and in the process, cutting trees and emitting gargantuan amounts of carbon di and mono oxides), do we get rid of our sins or add a few more into the list?
It is solely our paranoia that leads us in following these traditions. If we had clear consciences, we would have had nothing to fear. But we are all human in the end. We will never be perfect, we were never meant to be.
But does that mean we let these traditions rule us? Sure, they will always be part of us, but they should not define who we are, they may help shape our thoughts, but not be their origin.
Isn't it high time that we stop basking in the glory of those long passed and get the wheel of time out of the mud and moving again, high time that we made our own traditions? Think about it. Start today.
