Nerd; a foolish or contemptible person who lacks social skills or is boringly studious.

Hi, I am in high school. Yes, I like to study. I am a voracious learner. I like to scrutinise subjects thoroughly. I like to go into the depth of what I am being taught, because apparently, as a learner, a student, that is in fact, what I am supposed to do.

Sure, neither do I go to the wild parties you throw, nor organise such so called vivacious social events myself. Sure, I speak with a certain quality of language which comes of as snobbish or preppy. Sure, I had rather have a book in hand and headphones over my ears than someone’s self respect under my feet and derogatory speech being uttered from my mouth. Sure, I get better marks than entities who are exactly the opposite of the above mentioned criterias.

But that does not mean that it makes it okay for these entities to tease me for being different. It does not make their uncanny satisfaction at other's suffering okay. Just because unlike them, my dream heaven is a library, just because unlike them, I want to push myself forward instead of pulling someone else back, just because unlike them, I am doing what I am supposed to do does not make me abnormal or a weakling, but troubling me for being who I am, trying to give me a complex about myself does make them bullies.

In our country, there is absolutely zero awareness of what bullying means. People who live off other’s sufferings survive and thrive, mainly because they do not realise the fact that what they are doing is simply and utterly wrong,and that their actions are slowly killing that person from the inside, chewing at his guts, and are deadlier than the deadliest of diseases. And no, it isn’t the lack of anti-bullying laws, but the lack of awareness in the society. Did you know that about 14% of high schoolers around the world consider suicide and 7% of them attempt it due to these very reasons?

Sorry if I am not interested in either being a part of these statistics or causing them.

Sorry if I do not believe in such contemptuous forms of self satisfaction. Sorry if these practises seem morbid, macabre, and ghoulish to me. Sorry if I do not seem cool to you as I am too much of a weakling to put up with all this nonsense. Sorry if my senses of societal behaviour and ethics are still very much about me. Sorry, but if my non participation in actions that are aimed at destroying someone’s will for existence makes me socially inept and nerdy, then I am proud to be a nerd.
